1997

10. Funny Games
(dir. Michael Haneke)
9. The Game (dir. David Fincher)
8. Donnie Brasco (dir. Mike Newell)
7. Good Will Hunting (dir. Gus Van Sant)
6. Life is Beautiful (dir. Roberto Benigni)

5. The Sweet Hereafter (dir. Atom Egoyan)
This film brims with compassion for other people. Their problems, their fears, their disappointments.
4. Chasing Amy
(dir. Kevin Smith)
This is probably the best Kevin Smith movie. It's both hilarious and touching. Too bad he will probably never touch anything like this again.
3. L.A. Confidential (dir. Curtis Hanson)
Definitely, the most thrilling of this year's pictures. It's got a great story with lots of twists, lots of great dialogue and characters. If only Hollywood thrillers were always this good.
2. Boogie Nights (dir. Paul Thomas Anderson)
This would probably be #1 if it weren't for the fact that my #1 came out in Japan in 1997 but came to American theaters in 1999. I will always associate #1 with 99 so yeah Boogie Nights is the best movie of 1997.
1. Princess Mononoke (dir. Hayao Miyazaki)
No other movie thrilled, touched or quite simply entertained as much as this one. It's probably the best movie of 1999 as well.
